The system generates a pulsed, near ultra sonic tone at around 16KHz, close to the limit of the hearing range of people under the ages of 25.  The sound, whilst harmless, becomes highly irritating after approximately five minutes of exposure.  As a result people in the 20-25 age group leave the area, whilst the majority of people above this age are totally unaware of any noise.
